AL/GI BACK UP RING

AL/GI BACK UP RING

An Aluminium Back-Up Ring is a rigid, ring-shaped support component used in power cable jointing kits, especially in heat shrink and cold shrink types. It is placed around the cable joint, typically over the connector area, to provide structural support and improve sealing performance.

Functions & Purpose:

  1. Mechanical Support:
  • Provides a firm backing for the insulation layer (like heat shrink or cold shrink tubes) to shrink against.
  • Prevents collapse or deformation of insulation tubes over connectors.
  1. Enhanced Sealing:
  • When used with sealing mastic or tubes, it helps ensure a tight and uniform seal, keeping out moisture and contaminants.
  1. Connector Protection:
  • Placed over crimped or bolted connectors to protect against mechanical stress and movement.
  • Maintains joint integrity during cable bending or thermal expansion.
  1. Stress Distribution:
  • Helps in evenly distributing mechanical and electrical stresses, reducing the chance of insulation damage or failure over time.
  •

Where It’s Used:

  • In Low Voltage (LV) and Medium Voltage (MV) cable joints (typically up to 33kV).
  • Works with XLPE, PVC, or EPR-insulated cables.
  • Included in both straight through joints and termination kits where mechanical support over connectors is needed.
  •

Material & Design:

  • Made from high-quality aluminium, offering:
    • Good mechanical strength
    • Corrosion resistance
    • Excellent thermal conductivity
  • May be a solid ring or a split design for easy installation over pre-installed connectors.
