COPPER MESH

Copper mesh is a critical component used in cable straight joint kits, particularly in medium and high-voltage power cable applications. Its primary function is to restore the electromagnetic shielding and maintain electrical continuityacross the joint area after the outer sheath and metallic screen (or armor) of a cable have been cut and stripped for jointing.

 

Functions of Copper Mesh in Joint Kits:

  1. Electromagnetic Shielding:
    Power cables often have a metallic screen or shield (e.g., copper tape or wire screen) to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI) and contain the electric field within the cable. When cables are joined, this shielding is interrupted. The copper mesh re-establishes the shielding over the joint area.
  2. Electrical Continuity:
    The copper mesh ensures electrical continuity between the metallic screens of the two cables. It helps safely carry fault currents and provides a path for earth leakage currents.
  3. Mechanical Flexibility:
    The mesh structure offers good flexibility, making it easy to wrap around the joint and conform to the cable shape without causing mechanical stress.
  4. Corrosion Resistance and Durability:
    Copper’s inherent resistance to corrosion ensures long-term stability in underground or exposed environments.

Installation Notes:

  • The mesh is typically wrapped over the joint area after the core connection and insulation layers are completed.
  • It is connected to the existing copper screens of the two cable ends, often by soldering, clamping, or using constant force springs.
  • Additional layers like PVC or heat-shrinkable sleeves are applied over the mesh for environmental protection and mechanical integrity.
