HEAT SHRINK RAINSHED

HEAT SHRINK RAINSHED

What is a Rain Shed?

A rain shed is a specially designed insulating skirt or shed made from high-quality polymer materials like silicone rubber or EPDM. It is used in outdoor cable termination kits to enhance the creepage distance and prevent flashovers caused by water, dust, or pollution.

Rain sheds resemble an umbrella or fin-like structure installed over the cable insulation and termination components. Their primary function is to guide rainwater and contaminants away from the critical surfaces of the termination.

Purpose of a Rain Shed:

  1. Increase Creepage Distance:
  • Creepage distance is the shortest path between two conductive parts measured along the surface of the insulation.
  • Rain sheds increase the effective creepage distance, reducing the risk of surface electrical discharges.
  1. Prevent Flashovers:
  • In wet or polluted environments, water and dust can form a conductive path on the surface of the insulation.
  • Rain sheds help break up these paths by diverting water away, thus preventing flashovers.
  1. Improved Performance in Outdoor Environments:
  • Especially important in coastal, industrial, or dusty areas where contamination levels are high.
  • They ensure the termination performs reliably even under adverse weather conditions.
  1. UV and Weather Resistance:
  • Made from weather-resistant materials, rain sheds are durable and long-lasting.
