HV Self Amalgamating Insulating Tape

HV Self Amalgamating Insulating Tape

High Voltage (HV) self-amalgamating insulating tape is a critical component in cable jointing kits, particularly for medium to high voltage power cables. This specialized tape is designed to provide superior electrical insulation, moisture resistance, and mechanical protection in cable joints and terminations.

Key Features and Properties:

  1. Self-Amalgamating Nature:
  • The tape is made from a non-tacky rubber (commonly EPR – Ethylene Propylene Rubber or silicone-based materials).
  • When stretched and wrapped around a cable joint, it fuses to itself without the need for adhesives, forming a solid, void-free, insulating layer.
  1. High Dielectric Strength:
  • Offers excellent electrical insulation, making it suitable for use in high voltage applications (typically up to 36kV or higher depending on the tape type).
  • Maintains performance under electrical stress and over a wide range of temperatures.
  1. Weather and Moisture Resistance:
  • Provides an effective moisture seal, which helps prevent corrosion and electrical breakdown in joints.
  • Resistant to ozone, UV, and a range of environmental contaminants.
  1. Conformability and Flexibility:
  • Easily conforms to irregular shapes and contours of cable joints, connectors, or terminations.
  • Maintains flexibility even in cold temperatures, which helps accommodate cable movement and vibration.
  •

Applications in Cable Jointing Kits:

  • Primary Insulation:
Used to re-establish the insulation level over a jointed or spliced area, ensuring the electrical integrity of the cable is restored.
  • Stress Control:
Often used in conjunction with stress control tubing or mastic to manage electrical stress at the joint interfaces, especially in MV/HV joints.
  • Moisture Sealing:
Wrapped over and around joints to prevent water ingress, which is crucial for outdoor or underground cable installations.
  • Protection Over Lug or Connector:
Used to insulate and seal the connection point between the cable and termination accessories.
